Makenna, Makenna

  • Makenna hurt her shoulder about a year and a half ago...she decided to do a somersault over the back of our couch, landed wrong, and got a fracture in her shoulder. After awhile it was fine and life went on. Well, just last week she was washing her hair and came out of the shower screaming. Her arm was literally stuck - she couldn't move it up or down. So we took her in - it was dislocated and the doc got it put back, but he was concerned. Obviously washing her hair shouldn't have disclocated her shoulder. So he wanted to know what was going on and recommended an MRI. Makenna was nervous as we talked about it as a family. Quentin said, "Sweetie, we just want to do what's in your best interest." And she promptly replied, "But I'm not interested!" Anyway, we did the MRI and the doc was pleased with how things looked. He suggested a bit of physical therapy, which Makenna will start in a few weeks, and she should be good as new!
  • Makenna had a question on some of her homework one day. She had to find 4 puns in "Romeo and Juliet" and seemed stumped. I asked, "Well, first of all, what is a pun?" And she sat there for a minute, and replied, "Well...it's hard to explain. It's like, herherher." (a dorky laugh, showing someone's typical reaction to a pun!)

Silly Makenna

A few weeks ago, Makenna had an allergic reaction which created a rash around her eyes. We got it checked out by a dermatologist and it quickly went away. Tonight, Makenna was telling me a story. She said it happened around the time she had her "over reaction" a few weeks ago. Haha!

Mickey

The other day, Kiera got a new debit card in the mail that needed to be activated. I handed her the paperwork and told her she needed to call the number on the sticker. She got a panicked look on her face and said, "Well, what do I say?" I said, "It's totally automated. It will tell you what to do." She said seriously, "Are you sure it's animated? I won't have to talk to a real person?" I burst out laughing - she had said "animated" when she meant "automated." All I could imagine was Mickey Mouse on the other end of the phone saying in his cartoonish voice, "Hello! Thanks for calling Mountain America!" Haha!

Eye Roll

One day around the Sunday dinner table, the girls were listing the boys they kind of liked in order from #1 and on down. After awhile, they asked my mom ("Granny") who her number one boy is. She laughed and said, "Elvis of course!" And Kiera said, "Hmmm...Granny Presley. Has a nice ring to it!"

Funny

We just went on a trip to California for a Jacobson family reunion.  As we were driving through Nevada (long, hot and boring), Makenna fell asleep.  When she woke up, she looked around and said, "Why is it still so ugly?"

Our girls have always had fun when they get together with their cousin Jason Dougan.  They were looking forward to seeing him at the reunion but this time he is married.  Kasidee said, "I'm worried Jason will just be an adult now.  When they get married they're done with parties."

During this trip the girls each had some souvenir money.  Kiera said, "I should be spending money on saving!"

hehe

* Kasidee has had an obsession with vending machines for a couple of years. She made a pretty cool one out of a giant cardboard box and lots of masking tape a little over a year ago. It eventually sort of broke and we moved it into the garage. Quentin, thinking it was in the recycling pile, used it to catch oil during an oil change. Kasidee was upset and Quentin was heartbroken that he ruined her creation unintentionally. He vowed to help her make a new one or buy a cool one.
A few weeks ago, we found a cute little vending machine online. We showed it to Kasidee and asked her what she thought. She said, "I wish I could have my mid-life crisis now! I just really want a vending machine!" Haha! We did end up buying the machine and she has been in heaven!

* Kiera came in the room kind of mock-whining saying, "No one will play foosball with me!..." Makena didn't even look up from what she was doing and said in a monotone voice, "You are correct."

Ha

* Kasidee asked me if we were going to go to Lagoon this year. I admit I hate Lagoon and we've only taken Kiera and Makenna once about 10 years ago, when Makenna was about 3 or 4. Kasidee has never gone. I said to Kasidee, "Well, we'll have to see. We are going to Universal Studios this year and that's supposed to be even better than Lagoon." Kasidee said, "I think we should go to Lagoon soon so I can have a sufficient childhood."

* On the last day of school, Kasidee showed Quentin the picture in her yearbook of the boy she kind of likes. A few days later she told me that she showed him. She said, "He asked me if that was the boy I liked more than all the rest...and then it just got really awkward."

It's Been Awhile

For some reason, I haven't been able to log on to Blogger for awhile. It's working now! I've kept a few notes of funny things my girls have said. I like to have them all in one spot so that one day I can print them all in a book!

* Makenna was literally sleep talking one night after she fell asleep on the couch. As we tried to gently wake her up to get her to her bed she said in all seriousness, "Someone stole my baked beans."
* Kasidee asked me, "Can you put a tail in my pony?"
* Makenna was looking at Kasidee and asked me why she is so thin and petite. Then she said to me, "I guess I'm like multigrain bread."
* Kiera was learning to drive and we let her drive our family as we went out to dinner on Makenna's birthday. Makenna said, "If I get killed on my birthday I will be [Snape voice] severely disappointed."
* Kasidee saw a post I did of something I was trying to sell. She said, "Why are you selling that?" I told her it was 5 years old and we didn't need it anymore." She said, "Well, I'm 10 years old and I'm perfect!"
* We found out Quentin's cousin is going to adopt their second baby soon. I told my girls that he should be born around June 8. Makenna said, "Oh - is that when the baby will be seduced?" Quentin, Mom and I kind of giggled and then Makenna said, "Oh sorry, I meant is that when the mom will be seduced?"
* I caught Makenna looking at herself in the mirror. She turned to me and said, "Do I look like someone to mess with?"
* The girls were making a ruckus in the car one day. Quentin said, "Girls, can you please be quiet? You're hurting my ears." Makenna said, "Well, you're hurting my feelings."
* Makenna was looking at the birthday money Kiera got for her birthday. Makenna said, "Wait...you got paid for being born?"

Silly

  • Makenna registered for 8th grade this week and I thought it would be much easier than when Kiera did  - we already knew what to expect and Kiera could give her guidance of which classes to choose.  But it still was a big deal and full of big decisions because (surprise) Kiera and Makenna are different and have different strengths and interests.  After some discussion about the classes, Makenna sighed and said, "I just feel so pressurized!"
  • Kasidee was looking at the box of pasta we were cooking and exclaimed with a horrified look, "What?!  100% salmonella?!"  I had to explain that it said semolina, not salmonella....
  • We watched a documentary about Thomas Edison and his inventions.  One of them was the phonograph where he was able to record his own voice.  After the movie, Kasidee said, "I thought Edison only invented the lightbulb.  I had no idea he invented so many things, like the answering machine."  I tried to explain that it wasn't really an answering machine but more like a tape recorder.  She said, "What's a tape recorder?"  Yeah - I feel old.

Funnies

Here are a few funnies from the last few months:

  • Even though Kasidee is 9, she still likes to sleep in our bed every once in awhile.  One night while Quentin was getting ready for bed, she asked me, "Can I just lay in your bed with you and look at the ceiling?"
  • Makenna:  "Oh that car is so cute!  It's kind of an orange-y red.  Wait - it's orange.  With red."
  • One day while preparing to go somewhere for most of the day, Kasidee put snacks, water, gum and Kleenexs in a bag.  She called it her "Life Prepared Bag."
  • Kasidee told me, "I've been reminding you every day since yesterday."
  • Kiera had a dream near Christmastime that she was on "Santa's Elite Squad."
  • While listening to Christmas songs, Kasidee asked, "Wait - is it figgy pudding or piggy pudding?"  We couldn't convince her that it's really figgy pudding!
  • Kasidee, stuffing tissue paper in a bag for a small birthday gift:  "I didn't realize how big this bag was.  That's okay - I'll just tell him not to get excited."
  • A couple of weeks before Christmas, Kasidee saw a text on my iPad regarding a bike.  She was afraid she did something wrong by accidentally looking at my text, but I assured her that we knew she wanted a bike for Christmas but have had a hard time finding one.  She said, "Oh Mommy, that's okay.  Please don't worry about it.  I'll just ask Santa."
  • Makenna found out that Kasidee's friend got a brand-new iPhone.  Makenna said to me, "Why would anyone give their 9-year-old a phone?  There's no need, except for a-holding people."
  • One evening before Quentin's birthday, we decided to run to the dollar store to secretly get some small gifts for him.  Makenna had fallen asleep on the couch.  When I roused her and asked if she wanted to go with us, she said no.  So the rest of us went and Kiera and Kasidee helped pick out something they thought Quentin would like that Makenna could give him.   When he opened it on his birthday, she explained, "It's boring.  I'm sorry.  But I was asleep when I got it."
  • Now here's a funny thing Quentin said!  He was talking about his big theater screen.  He said, "It's 106 inches.  When I was going to buy it I thought, 'Wow...I can't pass that up!  It's 3 digits of inches!'"

He He

  • Kasidee spotted some rain boots at a store when we were in Oregon.  She looked at them funny then said, "Nobody wears these things.  If it's raining, you just don't go outside!"
  • Kasidee calls someone's behind their "Batootchka."

Ha!

During our trip to Oregon, we went through some canyon-type areas with lots of elevation changes. At one point, Makenna said, "I think I need to yawn my ears!"

Ha

Kasidee wore a pair of light khaki pants during our recent camping trip.  She rode 4-wheelers and her pants got pretty dirty.  After a couple of washings, the pants still didn't look very good.  She said, "Well, they were going to grow out of me someday anyway!"

Funnies

  • The other day, Makenna and Kasidee were having a debate about the name of "Chuck A Rama."  Kasidee told Makenna it is "Chuck A Rama. . . . .It's like chuck a grandma."  But Makenna insisted it is called "Chick A Rama. . . . It's like a chick doing the rama."
  • Makenna was invited to attend Girls Camp this year, though she was 2 months shy of being 12.  I was excited and nervous for her, but grateful that she would be with Kiera and that Quentin would also be there for 2 of the 5 days.  When she got home, she said she had so much fun.  She said, "I was only homesick, like, the last 5 days...."
  • Kasidee was sick with a high fever and sore throat.  For nearly 2 days all she wanted were drinks.  The third day, she said somewhat triumphantly, "I feel so much better!  I think my taste buds are coming back!"

He He!

  • Even though it's June, I caught Kasidee singing a Christmas song....  "Grab yourself a merry little Christmas."  I thought she was trying to be funny so I asked her about it and she genuinely thought those were the words to the song!
  • Makenna came home from a camp certification activity and told me she learned how to do the Heimlich Remover.

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Ha ha!

  • Kasidee - "I'm so glad I won the paper airplane contest, because I've never felt the winning spirit before!"
  • Makenna was working on a report for school, and I noticed she had put 2 spaces in between each word.  I asked her why, and she said totally seriously, "My teacher said it needed to be double-spaced...."
  • Makenna asked if I had hot rollers I could try in her hair.  I told her I still had some that I used when I was a kid.  She said, "Aren't those old fashioned?  Will they turn my hair into Mrs. Goldberg's?"
  • After Kiera and Makenna returned home from a Camp Certification activity, they were explaining what they learned.  All of a sudden Kasidee said seriously, "Oh my gosh, you sound so sustifficated!"
  • Makenna - "I can't believe I got a 94% on my test - I didn't even study!  I just wung it!"

Ha

  • Kasidee got up one morning and noticed her sheets weren't very tousled.  She said, "I guess I was actually a good night's sleeper last night!"
  • Kasidee's glasses broke in one place, and Quentin was able to fix it temporarily by melting perler beads (we call them melty beads).  Kasidee said, "I can tell all my friends that my dad melty-beaded them!"

Hee Hee!

  • Kasidee got a new apron for Christmas, one she was begging for about a month before Christmas.  She put it on and realized it was an adult size, so it was pretty long on her.  She said, "It's okay.  I can still wear this when I'm an old maid!"
  • Kasidee was admiring a pillowcase that her Primary teacher had embroidered for her.  She said, "I can't believe Sister Weaver sewed this...I mean, sued it?"

More Ha Ha's!

  • My mom made ambrosia salad for part of our Christmas Eve dinner this year.  Makenna really enjoyed it and asked if she could have more "amnesia salad."
  • Makenna overheard Quentin mentioning that in some stakes men in presidency positions can have a beard.  Makenna misheard him and exclaimed with wide eyes, "Wait - in some stakes you can have a beer?"
  • The day after Christmas, Makenna asked if we were going to go anywhere.  I said, "Well, not really - maybe Target or something."  She said, "Yes!  I want to show off my new Converse."  I told her that we wouldn't be seeing anyone there that we know.  She said, "That's okay.  I just want to show them off to random strangers."

Monday, November 30, 2015

Ha ha!

  • The day after Thanksgiving, we pulled out all the leftovers and had another big meal.  After we were done and began cleaning up, Makenna said, "Thank you!  This meal was atrocious...wait, what does that mean?"
  • Kasidee came home from school one day, so excited to tell me about what she had learned in her SEM class.  She said, "We learned all about brittle!"  (Braille)
  • The girls were playing a guessing game with Christmas songs.  One would shake a bell to the tune of a song and the other girls had to guess which song it was.  Makenna did, "Up on the Housetop."  Kasidee excitedly exclaimed, "Oh I know this one!  It's 'Raintop Tra La La's!'"
