Yet Another Catch-Up

This summer has been so busy, but I thought I'd take a minute to blog a few of our adventures...

We went camping! We planned on taking our tent trailer but our poor van (this was before we got our new Pilo) would not be able to pull it. So we tented it again, which was fun - but I can't wait to have our tent trailer back next year. It makes camping a lot easier!

Anyway, we went to Smith and Morehouse again and had fun with Quentin's siblings and cousins!

Kasidee and Isaac liked hanging out together

Kiera and Marina (with Quentin's help) made bows out of sticks and twine and "arrows" made out of sticks

Makenna had fun making fairy houses

Canoeing and kayaking on the lake

Makenna celebrated her 8th birthday and Kasidee celebrated her 5th birthday! Makenna's friend party one day, a family party for Makenna and Kasidee the next day, and Kasidee's friend party the next. Whew - it was a birthday week!

Eating dirt and worms....

Kasidee LOVES Minnie Mouse!

Simple Minnie Mouse cupcakes

Playing "Pin the Bow on Minnie"

Yesterday we joined a few of our neighbor friends for the $2 Tuesday at Thanksgiving Point. We went to the Dinosaur Museum, which also had a special "The Science of Sound" exhibit from the Exploratorium in San Francisco (I just love the Exploratorium!) It was busy and crazy but the girls had a lot of fun, especially being able to meet up with their friends Sophie and Chloe.

Say what?!

Lookee What I Did!

So most of you may know we have a lot of apple trees. Like nine. And that's a lot. And to be honest, I could pretty much care less about them. Oh sure, they're a pretty border to our backyard and I like to be able to pick a fresh apple every once in awhile. But they can be a lot of work, and the varities of apples we have aren't my favorite.

But behold - we have one beloved peach tree. I just love peaches - they're like a little piece of sunshine. Our poor peach tree has slowly been dying and we've had to cut big branches off to try to save the rest. Last year we got 2 peaches - one of them the birds ate, and the other one we all carefully savored. I was afraid it was over for our little peach tree.

Imagine our surprise when this year our peach tree was loaded! We've been picking 6 or 8 peaches at a time and just devouring them. Soooo good! But we just couldn't keep up. Every time I'd go out to pick some more, I noticed a lot on the ground. So I decided it was time to do something. I picked every last one off the tree, sorted them, and ended up with about 45 peaches. There's no way we could eat that many before they spoiled. I thought of sharing them, making something peachy - and then it hit me. Freezer jam!

Now, I don't have any clue when it comes to canning and frankly I don't have a desire to learn. At least not right now. It seems to technical, and if you mess up you can make your whole family sick. It's too much pressure for me. But I remember my mom making freezer jam and it seemed a lot easier. So...that's what I did! It took about 4 hours and I ended up with about 27 cups of pretty, yummy peach jam. How awesome is that?

Funnies

I've been saving up some funnies for awhile....

* Makenna and her cousin Jason were teasing each other. Makenna smelled Jason's feet and said with a smile, "Mmmm...smells like...sweetness!"

* Jason was tickling Kasidee. He asked her, "Did I find your ticklish spot yet?" Kasidee stopped laughing and very seriously said, "Can't you hear me laughing?"

* Makenna said about 21-year-old Jason, "Jason's not like a normal boy. He's much nicer."

* Kasidee exclaimed, "Mommy, I think my hiccups got away!"

* We were at a restaurant where a sign near the exit read "Do not remove food from the premises." Makenna read the sign out loud to me and then scrunched up her nose and said, "What does 'the premises' mean? 'The cup?' 'The plate?' I don't get it."

* One time Makenna said, "Oh, I would love to!...I just don't want to." (I would love to be that honest sometimes!)

* For some reason we can't yet figure out, Makenna just does not like singing in church. We've tried all sorts of things to motivate her to join us in singing. The best she will do? Point to the words and hum. That's Makenna.

New Car - Part 2

Okay, so here's a pic of our "new" car - 2006 Honda Pilot. The color is called "Amazon Green," but it looks green/gray/tan depending on the lighting - love it! Anyway, it is 3 years newer and has fewer miles than the ones we had been looking at, and we got it at an awesome price. Even better - we used the preschool money I'd been stashing away for years and we have no car payment! Yay! We just love this car - something safe and reliable that our family will have for years and years! Isn't it pretty?

New Car!

(This is a long story...Sorry...)

So most of you know that we have 2 old cars that we've been running into the ground. We have a 1995 Ford Contour that our neighbor in our old neighborhood was donating to the Kidney Foundation and offered to sell it to us for what he would have received - 350 bucks. But he warned us that the car probably wouldn't last very long - that was about 7 years ago and we haven't had any major problems until recently. The driver's side window doesn't roll down and the fan for the a/c and heater doesn't work. Just a few weeks ago, Quentin replaced the gaskets and spark plugs and it was running like new - until it started overheating (which was totally unrelated to what Quentin had fixed). One night coming home from Provo, it took us 3 hours because we had to stop about 5 times because it kept overheating and it blew some hoses. Ugh.

We also have a 1995 Mazda minivan. We bought it about 9 years ago and have absolutely loved it. But the driver's side window doesn't roll down, oil leaks onto the engine and causes it to smoke, and the speedometer constantly sounds like a loud tweeting bird every time we drive it. We've been living with it like this for quite awhile, grateful to not have a car payment, but within the last few weeks the air conditioning went out and it makes a horrible grinding sound. On our last camping trip we borrowed Quentin's parents car because we couldn't trust either of ours. Not wanting to invest money into something that most likely wouldn't last long, we knew it was time to look for another car.

We didn't want a car payment and have been stashing money aside for awhile, but we were on a very limited budget. We knew we liked Honda Pilots, but Hondas are Hondas - they hold their value so it's hard to find an affordable Honda. We looked at other makes and models but felt that the Pilot fit all of our needs for a family car that would last a long time.

We did lots of research, kept checking the classifieds (sometimes a half a dozen times a day!), and took a whole day to test drive cars all over the valley but just didn't feel right about any of the ones we saw, even though they were perfectly fine cars.

Then this afternoon Quentin emailed me a link to an ad. It was for a Pilot that was 3 years newer than some of the ones we looked at, had fewer miles, and was a good price. The ad was pretty short and only had a few pictures, but for some reason I felt so excited inside. In fact, I pretty much paced around the house for a couple of hours until Quentin got home from work.

When he got home, we talked about it. The car was in Logan, about an hour away, and we debated on if it was worth going all that way just to look at it. But we figured we'd be curious if we didn't, so we took off.

For some reason, when we looked at and test drove this car, it immediately felt right. We pulled out our handy-dandy "Used Car Checklist" from Popular Mechanics and did a quick check. But we knew. We had only looked at it for about 20 minutes when Quentin said to me, "Let's go back and make an offer." What?! We are both so cautious, especially when it comes to big decisions. Shouldn't we drive it a little more? Check it out more? Sleep on it and decide tomorrow? No - we both knew it was ours.

We made an offer a little lower than what they were asking. The seller basically said, "You know, I can't accept that on the first day. I have had it listed just since this afternoon and have already gotten dozens and dozens of calls on it. I won't budge on the price. In fact, I'm wondering if I should list it higher because I thought it had 4,000 miles more than it does when I looked at the fair market value." We finally made a deal we both felt good about (he did end up going down a bit). So after playing the negotiating game a bit, it was a done deal. We followed the sellers to their house, they signed over the title, they accepted a personal check for the full amount, and we drove it home. I still am amazed that they trusted us so much (personal check, letting us take it home!)

I think one of the best parts of this story is when we went to the seller's house to fill out the paperwork. He opened the door and said, "You guys have been praying about this, haven't you?" We admitted that we have been praying for months to find the right car for our family, and something we can afford (we didn't want a car payment.) He basically said, "Well, we had talked about selling it for awhile but we put it online today kind of on a whim, not really knowing why." I guess now we know - and I thank Heavenly Father for being aware of our situation and helping us find a safe, reliable car that our family can enjoy for years and years.

So...because it was about 11:00 p.m. when we got home, I'm going to make you wait till I can get a good picture to show you our "new" car! Yippee!

Major Catchup

Summer has just gotten away from me. We've been busy having fun and I just haven't taken time to blog. But I want to make sure to document it (for my sake!) before I forget!

I told the girls they could each pick one summer rec class to take this summer. Kiera and Makenna had a hard time choosing between gymnastics and ice skating. I noticed ice skating had a 2-for-1 deal and I didn't think Makenna should do gymnastics on her newly-healed broken wrist. So I signed up Kiera and Makenna for ice skating, Kiera and Kasidee for gymnastics, and I wanted Makenna and Kasidee to do swimming lessons (but I ended up not being able to find lessons that coordinated with our vacation schedules. Oh well.) Anyway, they all had fun in their classes and it gave us something to look forward to each week.

We had planned on going camping with our friends, The Baileys, but it just didn't work out. We both have tent trailers but gut-less vans to pull them and we had a hard time finding a campsite that didn't involve climbing lots of hills or that allowed dogs or campfires. So we ditched the camping idea and decided to spend a day together. We went hiking/geocaching, had a picnic, walked along the Lagoon Trail, and then ended up having dinner at the Bailey's house. We wanted to watch a movie in the theater room too but ran out of time. We'll save that for another day.

My friend Kate and I wanted to do a neighborhood mom-and-me summer bookclub. I hosted the one for July and I did a "Bookworms" theme. We had the kids bring their all-time favorite picture book to show and discuss, we made bookmarks, and we had treats - Smarties ("Hey there, Smarty Pants!"), Nerds ("Gotta love being a book nerd!"), Gummy Worms ("Cute little bookworms") and cookies. We had a pretty good turnout, and it was fun!

One Saturday we met Quentin's brother and cousins and their families at the American West Heritage Center near Logan. We had never been before, and it was really fun. Lots of fun pioneer activities! It reminded me a little of "This is the Place" but cheaper and a lot less crowded! We all had fun, then we had Aggie ice cream afterward.

Last Wednesday my 2 sisters, brother-in-law, nephew and niece came up from Texas for a visit! We had 6 days of busy-crazy fun! Riding the tram at Snowbird, 2 family reunions, Thanksgiving Point, movie night in our theater room, dinner at my aunt and uncle's house in Provo Canyon (their house and neighborhood is what I dream of for a cabin!), walking to Bridal Veil Falls, a crazy car breakdown adventure, a long hike in the heat of the day, eating out a lot, chatting and visiting a lot, giggling at my always funny cousin Kanevin, staying up late and getting up early... Good times, good times! It's funny how years can go between us seeing each other but when we get together it's like no time has passed at all. It's always so fun to be together, to catch up, and to have fun experiences together!
